I was diagnosed stage four in October and have done 8 cycles of chemo which removed all cancerous cells except original tumor. Has anyone else done treatment backwards? Chemo before surgery?

I did chemo first then surgery then radiation. My tumor went from 7 cm to 5 mm after chemo. Congrats on finishing chemo!!!!

I have not experienced it myself, but I do know that they often go that route because it sometimes is more effective in lessening the side effects or complications from the surgery. Prayers to you and warm thoughts always.

I had 12 weekly doses of taxol and 4 doses of A/C before my lumpectomy. My tumor shrunk from 3x2 to just tissue which made getting my margins clear the first time. Every oncologist and patient is different though. Good luck with your upcoming surgery!

I was stage 2a estrogen positive and since my tumor responded so well to chemo they recommended a lumpectomy. I am guessing since you are stage 4? When they were talking lump vs mast did they know your receptor status and or stage? Did tour treatment plans change after finding out more info about your tumor? If I were stage 4-I would with no doubt get a mastectomy. Where had it spread to?

I had T/H presurgery. Stage 3 her2positive and Estrogen positive. After 3 21 day cycled a PEt scan showed chemo stopped growth but did not decrease any of the cancer... So went to surgery- lumpectomy and node dissection. Now back in chemo... If I could have gotten out of chemo or radiation I would have chosen mastectomy... But since nodes involved I need both .. So all docs and tumor board recommended to only have lumpectomy and node dissection.. It is really individualized, so each choice will be based on what you need.

cancer treatment is very individualized so you won't find a norm on any aspect of treatment. With that said I've heard quite a few people say they did chemo first.

I'm having 8 rounds of chemotherapy- 4 with A/C and then 4 with Taxol and Herceptin (which goes on alone for a year), then I will have mastectomy and then on to radiation. I just had my 3rd treatment, and already we have seen big changes and improvement... I was diagnosed with IBC stage 3b

Yes, I am getting neoadjuvent chemo, or chemo before surgery and radiation. The purpose or rationale is shrink the tumor to have a more breast conserving surgery. My tumor was about 4 x 6 cm, which would have required a mastecomy to remove. I have completed 4 rounds of AC and the first 2 of 12 rounds of Taxol/Herceptin and the doctor can no longer feel a lump. I should be able to have a lumpectomy with clean margins in July, followed by radiation, with the same prognosis or outcome as a more radical surgery. Best wishes to you : )
