I did just last week! It is like the biopsy. The wires were placed during a mammogram (very awkward, I agree) but the areas were numbed so the needles/ wires didn't hurt. They stayed in for the surgery that followed immediately after.

Did you do a lumpectomy? Did you have a lymph node dissection? I don't know why but I feel so nervous about this surgery. Were you nervous?

I had two wire guided lumpectomies, the first was when they inserted the wires, not painful, nothing to stress about, they removed the cancer, but I had to go back for a second lumpectomy a month later because the found precancerous cells in samples they took around the area of the lumpectomy, they left a marker in after the first wire guided lumpectomy, this made the second one was much easier, they didn't have to go through the procedure of installing the wires, I was able to go right into surgery.

The day I went in they put in the wire, they numbed the skin where they injected medicine like that of Novocain that the dentist would use, did not feel pain, did not feel any pain when they installed the wires, I was given a shot, which they also numbed the area so I could not feel it, 1 hour before surgery to light up the main lymph nodes, this helps the surgeon to know which lymph nodes are the main ones. The shot faded because it only lasts for about an hour, I could not get into surgery until about 2 hours, this meant the shot faded and they had to take thirteen lymph node samples, it would have been much less if it would have worked like it was suppose to, but even with that, no pain did I feel, not even the IV, they put numbing medicine on my skin. I was sent home with pain med. There was some pain where they took the lymph node samples when I got home, but none where they did the lumpectomy. I returned to work 2 weeks later. I have a light duty job. Definitely nothing to be afraid of. I did not need reconstructive surgery, mine was about an inch away from the aureola on the top side of my right breast, my surgeon was very good, he did a great job in reshaping so no further surgery was needed even after the second one. By the way you will not be awake during surgery, I don't remember anything past being wheeled in to the room then blank, I hope this helped.

My question when do they insert the wire? Does it hurt? Did you have reconstruction surgery afterwards? Thanks so much for answering!

Wire guided mastectomy was something I did last week, along w sentinel node mapping. Neither procedure was painful, just awkward.

I have had a wire guided lumpectomy. I do not know what a Q painball is, but I did have lymph node surgery.

Inserting the wire was similar to the biopsy. It didn't hurt too much. The wire is placed the day of the surgery. I have had no reconstructive surgery yet. I had a mastectomy on the other side at the same side.

Thanks so much Bonnie. I went to my surgeon yesterday but I haven't been feeling well from my chemo so I didn't ask her the details. I'll be having my surgery May 30. The on-Q-painball is for pain relief from the lymph node surgery. I have on positive node. Is there anything Ican do before the surgery to be more physically prepared. I appreciate the time you take to answer my questions.

I had the wire guided lumpectomy. The wire placement is not fun but not too bad. Did not need any pain meds after the lumpectomy except a bit of Ibuprofen. I also used ice packs for a few days when needed. The node biopsy was more uncomfortable than the lumpectomy...
